Abstract

Escherichia coli isolated from avian cellulits lesions in broiler chickens produce a cytotoxin called Vat (vacuolating autotransporter toxin)that causes intense vacuolization in avian cells, but not in mammalian cells. Previous studies have shown that Vat induced, in broilers, releasing inflammatory cytokines TNF-± and IL-10. Moreover, histological analysis of lesions induced experimentally by Vat, in broilers, showed microscopic changes in subcutaneous, adipose and connective tissues, including inflammation signs. These data indicate the role of Vat in the development of avian cellulitis. In addition, the study of the intracellular activity of Vat: internalization, intracellular translocation and structural changes in chicken embrio fibroblasts (CEF) may help to elucidate the specificity of Vat in CEF and not to mammalian cells. It also aims to relate the specificity of anti-Vat antibody against biological activities of other vacuolating cytotoxins. The results may contribute to understanding the mechanisms of development of avian cellulitis in broiler chickens. (AU)
