Abstract

The Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex disorder represented by a set of cardiovascular risk factors related to central adiposity and resistance to insulin. A dietary counseling associated with lifestyle changes are considered first-choice therapies for the treatment of patients. For the dietary intervention, it is necessary to estimate the patient's basal and total metabolic rates. There are, however, differences in results between the available formulas in the literature. Thus, the objective of this paper is to compare the results of the estimation of resting metabolic rate obtained by the formulas of Harris & Benedict (1919), FAO / WHO (1985), DRI's (2001) and Horie et al (2011) with the results of indirect calorimetry, that is considered the gold standard, in order to establish which one best relates the energy expenditure in patients with MS, fundamental for planning appropriate weight loss.
