Abstract

Bulbophyllum Thouars, with 1879 espécies, is the second largest genus of angiosperms and is represented by six sections in the Neotropics. Within the sections, floral morphology varies probably due to environmental pressures and pollinators specificity. The aim of this study is to answer the following questions: a) Which of the floral morphological and anatomical characteristics vary due to the phylogenetic relationship in the neotropical sections of Bulbophyllum? b) Are there any characteristics that can be considered as floral anatomical synapomorphies for the neotropical sections of Bulbophyllum? c) Which of the floral morphological and anatomical characteristics vary according to the environment in the neotropical sections of Bulbophyllum? The characters will be assessed through conventional techniques both of light and scanning electron microscopies, as well as by literature reviews. With this study, it is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the neotropical sections of Bulbophyllum, providing micromorphological and anatomical information and identifying possible synapomorphies.
