Abstract

Bulbophyllum Thouars is the second largest genus of Angiosperms and is divided in six sections in the neotropics. Floral morphology varies between the sections, probably due to environmental pressures and pollinator specificity. The aim of this is study is to answer the following questions: a) Are there floral morphoanatomical synapomorphies for Bulbophyllum sections Didactyle and Micranthae? b) Do floral morphoanatomical characteristics support the circumscription and monophily of Bulbophyllum sections Didactyle and Micranthae? c) Are there any floral morphoanatomical characteristics of Bulbophyllum sections Didactyle and Micranthae that vary due to the environment? For character assessment, usual techniques of light and scanning electron microscopies, as well as literature review, will be employed. It is expected that this study will contribute to a better understanding of Bulbophyllum sections Didactyle and Micranthae, identifying possible floral synapomorphies and corroborating or not the current circumscription of those sections. Moreover, it will be verified which characteristics reflect the environment which each species inhabits. (AU)
