Abstract Ronald de Carvalho (1893-1935) got involved in the most significant activities of his time - he was a diplomat, poet, historian, lecturer, letter writer and traveler - all of them were carried out dialoguing with the intelligentsia in Brazil and abroad. These references appoint him as one of the most important collective authors in the early decades of the nineteenth century, however he has a small space dedicated to the study of this period. Considering the previous information, the aim of this project is to analyze the intellectual journey of the referred author mainly by his correspondence, evaluating him on his own context and relating him to the actions of modernism. The proposed hypothesis suggests that this particular and comparative exam of a trajectory (in this case, very well defined by the act of travelling), contributes to the understanding of the debates and dilemmas experienced by a specific social and cultural section, programmatically endangered.
