Abstract

Mangroves are transitional ecosystems between continental and marine environments of great environmental, economical and social importance, and under severe pressure from human activities. However, the mineralogical assemblage of mangrove soils is relatively poor understood, although its essential functions on pedogenetical evolution and geochemical behavior of these soils, plus important role in phenomena associated with the behavior of toxic substances (metals, hydrocarbons etc.). The present project, the second stage of "Auxílio-Pesquisa" supported by FAPESP (proc. 2009/51453-0), aims to advance on the research of mineralogical assemblage of mangrove soils from all regions of Brazilian coast, seeking to understand the origin of phylossilicates and its association with geochemical, geomorphological and oceanographic characteristics of mangroves and continental areas around (sediments sources). The complex assemblages, high kaolinite, Fe-illite and smectite contents, with a great variation on quantitative contents and crystallinity of minerals will be further investigated, beyond the assemblage composition of non sampled mangroves. Qualitative and quantitative mineralogical analysis of clay and fine clay fraction of soils, based on x-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy (with elemental analysis by EDS system), electron diffraction and atomic force microscopy, as porewater chemistry analysis for making stability diagram of minerals will be carried out in this second stage of the research. It is expected more detailed information about mangrove phyllosilicates composition and the identification and understanding of processes related to the genesis of these components in the studied environment.
