Abstract

The natural products are promising sources to discover new therapeutic potential agents. The substances of secondary metabolism are great economic interest and have being studied by researchers, since the plants are widely used in popular medicine. One of these substances is the lignans, belonging to one of the major classes of secondary metabolites, phenolic compounds. The (-)-cubebin is a compound isolated from the dried seeds of Piper cubeba. Both (-)-cubebin as its semi synthetic derivative (-)-hinokinin have activity against amastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. The (-)-cubebin has other biological activities, such as bacteriostatic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, among others. It becomes relevant to assess the genotoxic potential of (-)-cubebin and its the influence on chromosomal damage induced by doxorubicin in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79 cells). In this sense, the frequency of micronuclei in 6000 binucleated cells/treatment will be used as a parameter of analysis. The nuclear division index, obtained from the analysis of 3000 cells/treatment, will be used to evaluate of cytotoxicity. These studies should contribute to a better understanding of action of (-)-cubebin in the human organism, in this way aiming at safer use of this compound. (AU)
