Abstract

In the bees societies, some females can produce more offspring than the other interacting females, resulting in a reproductive skew. Orchid bees (Euglossini tribe) colonies can be valuable for understanding the relationship between genetic relatedness and reproductive skew. Orchid bees belong to the monophyletic clade of corbiculate bees that also includes Stingless bees (Meliponini), Bumblebees (Bombini) and Honeybees (Apini). Within the clade of corbiculate bees, Euglossines are the only group that is not clearly eusocial. In some colonies of the genus Euglossa, one of the five genus of the Euglossini, under the same circumstances, there is a reproductive dominance among females sharing a nest, causing a reproductive skew. Models have been proposed to explain the presence of reproductive skew in different animal societies, some of which predict a positive correlation between genetic relatedness and reproductive skew, while others predict a negative or absent correlation. This study aims to test, based on behavioral analysis associated with analysis of intranest genetic structure, the following working hypothesis: in the nests of Euglossa cordata and Euglossa townsendi reproductive skew is positively correlated to genetic relatedness and mating system of females.
