Abstract

This research project is the result of an idea born yet during the Masters Degree, when we conducted a study on the dynamics of the relationship between the society of Mato Grosso, the "riparian" and the northern Pantanal nature, between the years 1870 to 1930. At the time of identification, location and selection of documents to be handled over a wide floodable area, we faced a multiple and plural universe, as it relates to spaces, social groups and daily activities. However, what most caught our attention were the cultural factors (blood and neighborhood ties, solidarity, loyalty and cronyism, not to mention, representation, ownership and hands-on over nature), which engendered a local logic, pervaded by codes and rules visible and invisible. Although we have studied these aspects as regards the mini-lands of the border of navigable rivers, of the northern Pantanal, we chose to select and transcribe a part of the documentation, which in the case could be used in future works and would give emphasis on large rural properties and not small and medium. This is exactly the purpose of this thesis, trying to understand the cultural universe represented and practiced by a part of the flooded region residents: households and comrades, into their habitus in order to understand the update of rationality and logic of everyday life. For this purpose we will use a well-diversified documentary typology, part of which has already been acted upon before, including: maps, tables, photographs, reports, messages and speeches of the provincial and state governors, criminal cases, customs documents, marriage, birth and death records; along with the stories and chronicles of the national and foreign travelers.
