Epidemiological study on oral health conditions in children under 5 years of age in Diadema - Sao Paulo

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to assess the oral health conditions regarding dental caries, traumatic dental injuries and malocclusion in the population of children younger than five years old, who live in the municipality of Mauá, SP. This study aims also to know which biological, socioeconomic and religious factors are associated with these problems, determine the presence of carious tooth pain by means of a new instrument validated in Portuguese, and assess the impact of these oral health conditions on children´s quality of life. A basic epidemiological study of oral health will be carried out in 2015, including data collection through interviews and intraoral clinical examination. The study will be conducted during the Children´s National Multivaccination Campaign in Mauá, following the same methodology reported in previous studies (de Vasconcelos et al., 2009; Bonecker et al., 2010; Murakami et al., 2015; Abanto et al., 2015). The representative sample for the study will comprise at least 756 children, who will be systematically selected in the vaccination queue. The informed consent form will be signed by legal guardians of participants. Children will be examined in 21 Basic Health Units of Mauá by 21 trained and calibrated dentists. The epidemiological index used for the evaluation of dental caries will be ICDAS - International Caries Detection and Assessment System (. Ismail et al, 2007) and for the review of treatment decisions the ICCMS -. International Caries Classification and Management System (Pitts et al 2014), and Andreasen´s criteria (2007) for traumatic dental injuries will also be assessed. The malocclusion will be evaluated by Foster classification. For the first time, the ICCMS index will be used in an epidemiological study. Trained community agents will collect children´s personal, socioeconomic (Jarman, 1983) religiosity (Koenig et al., 1997;. Taunay et al, 2012) data, and a questionnaire about caries toothache (Verslott et al,. 2006; Daher et al., 2014; Daher et al., 2015) will also be assessed. The B-ECOHIS instrument (Pahel et al., 2007; Tesch et al., 2008; Scarpelli et al., 2011) will be used to assess the oral health impact on the quality of life of these individuals. (AU)
