Self-Efficacy in Diabetes mellitus: psycometric performance of the Brazilian version of the Insulin Management Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale (IMDES)in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

This study aims to verify the psychometric performance of the Brazilian version of the Insulin Management Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale - IMDSES, which assesses self-efficacy of diabetic outpatients in the management of Diabetes Mellitus, when applied to type 2 diabetes outpatients who are insulin dependents. Specific objectives accomplish evaluate the practicability, acceptability, ceiling and floor effects, the reliability and construct and criterion validity of the Brazilian version of IMDSES. Participants will be enrolled from an outpatient clinic at a university hospital in the state of Sao Paulo and must be insulin dependents type 2 diabetic diagnosed. The data will be gathered through the application of validated sociodemographic and clinical instruments, Brazilian versions of the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Measures - SDSCA and IMDSES. The practicability of the Brazilian version of IMDSES will be evaluated by the average time of application. Acceptability will be verified by the percentage of unanswered items and the proportion of patients who responded to all items. The ceiling and floor effects will be assessed considering the percentage of patients who scored in the 10% best and worst results of the scale, respectively. The reliability of the Brazilian version of IMDSES will be estimated with regard to the homogeneity of the items. The construct validity will be tested through the correlation between the total score of self-efficacy measure and the measure of level of self-care (Brazilian version of SDSCA). Criterion validity will be evaluated using the relation between the measure of self-efficacy and serum concentrations of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C). The data will be submitted to descriptive analysis. The Cronbach's alpha will be used to determine the internal consistency. The correlation coefficient (Pearson or Spearman) will be used to test the correlation between self-reported measures of self-efficacy and level of self-care, and between reported self-efficacy and serum dosage of HbA1C. It is expected that the results of this study contribute to the psychometric refinement of the Brazilian version of the IMDSES, in order to allow its use in nurse-driven intervention studies designed to enhance diabetic outpatients self-efficacy in the management of Diabetes Mellitus.
