Abstract

Surveys conducted in various regions of the world showed the mycotoxin contamination in wheat and wheat products. In Brazil, there are few studies about the occurrence of zearalenone in wheat and/or wheat products. Thus, it is important to conduct studies to evaluate the quality of the wheat produced in Brazil for contamination with mycotoxins and identify the contamination by the origin of the samples. The objectives of this study are a) to evaluate the zearalenone contamination in wheat produced in 4 Brazilian wheat production regions with distinct climatic conditions. b) obtain the mapping of zearalenone contamination of wheat produced in Brazil. 360 wheat samples produced in the states of Parana, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Minas Gerais during the 2010 crop will be collected. The zearalenone will be extracted with acetonitrile: water (84:16) and cleaned up by a solid phase column (MycoSep 224). The detection and quantification will be by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) employing fluorescence detection and confirmation employing a diode array detector.
