Abstract

This project aims to study the thixoformability, ie, the potential for applications in thixoforming processes of hipoeutectic cast iron modified by chromium, with the basic composition Fe-2,5wt%C-Xwt%Cr-1%,5wt%Si. Alloys containing chromium content of 0, 2, 4 and 6wt%Cr, will be manufactured and donated to the project by the company IMBIL - Industry and Maintenance of Pumps Ltd. ITA., According to design specifications. The solidus and liquidus temperatures are determined by simulation via Thermo-Calcâ, as well as via DSC. This way it will get the temperatures to evaluate the thixoformability targets, which requires the reheating temperature of the material enough to produce 45 to 60% of solid fraction. Specimens will be subjected to heat treatments reheating to evaluate the morphological evolution. Parameters are determined: the proportion of phases, estimation of grain size / globule average size and form and spacing of graphite flakes. This characterizations are also made in the material as received. The semi-solid rheological behavior at this stage will be determined via the hot compression test. The compositions that present the best performance concerning to the morphological and rheological aspects will be thixoformed to obtain tensile test specimens to evaluate the mechanical behavior. The thixoforming tests will be evaluated in terms of die filling, porosity of the final product, roughness and surface characteristics in terms of oxide formation. (AU)
