In the last years cast irons have been proved as potential raw materials for semisolid processing presenting favorable skills such as good fluidity and stability at the semisolid state. New Fe-2.5C-xCr-1.5Si alloys (where x is 3, 5 and 7Cr) have been evaluated in a doctoral study in progress (FAPESP 2011/19997-0) as a potential semisolid raw material and preliminary results pointed to low levels of stress and viscosity at the semisolid state (similar to Al-Si alloys) and morphological stability without no significant variations in microstructure with the increase of holding time at the semisolid state. However, a properly comprehension of the influence of chromium in the eutectic dissolution, austenitizing and liquid phase formation is a fundamental step to characterize the proposed alloys - in situ experiments based on heating a sample to the semisolid state at High Temperature Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (HT-LSCM) is a technique that can help to elucidate these questions once with this tool it is possible to observe the chromium rich phases dissolution and liquid phase formation along the heating process from room temperature until the melting. In addition, with this technique it is possible to estimate the liquid phase sensitivity measuring the real liquid phase variation with the increasing of the temperature along the time. Thus, this project aims to request a BEPE for a two months period at the JWRI laboratories at Osaka University intending to perform high temperature in situ observation of Fe-2.5C-xCr-1.5Si hypoeutectic cast irons. Still, in situ observation at HT-LSCM is a technique that is not available in Brazil and JWRI staff has plenty experience and know-how studying phase transformations in ferrous alloys. (AU)
