Abstract

There remains an interest in alternative Ti forming techniques due to issues associated with conventional forming processes. Typical issues associated with plastic forming and conventional casting may include: high tooling costs, high tooling wear rates, reactivity between Ti and the mold material, possible oxidation, and shrinkable. An approach addressing the abovementioned shortcomings is taken via thixoforming, which is an important branch of semisolid processing that involves forming of partially melted alloys. Successful thixoforming strongly depends on the morphology of the remaining solid phase, which must be globular. In this regard, understanding the mechanisms involved in the solid phase formation and coarsening are of paramount importance. Therefore, the aim of this project is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of Ti alloys specifically designed for thixoforming. For this purpose, phase transformations and microstructural/morphological changes in the semisolid state will be characterized via in situ high-temperature laser-scanning confocal microscopy (HT-LSCM). The results are expected to be very useful for allowing a direct comparison between in situ and ex situ analyses. Furthermore, the melting and solidification processes analyzed under HT-LSCM will complement the already established DSC and thermodynamic simulation results.
