Evaluation of nutritional orientation of patients from a Basic Health Unit: implementation of revised diet quality index before and after the orientation

Abstract

Due to early diagnosis of chronic diseases and the recognition of the influence of diet on development and progression, the demand for nutritional counseling has grown significantly. Therefore the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of individual nutritional orientation in the clinical treatment, changes in eating habits and lifestyle of the patients. For such checks it will be applied two Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), one before and one after the orientation for subsequent calculation of the Revised Diet Quality Index (HEI-R) proposed by Previdelli et al. (2011), one for each of the questionnaires. It is a longitudinal study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional counseling on diet quality of the Adult Outpatient Nutrition's patients, from Centro de Saúde Escola, belonging to Botucatu's Medicine School - UNESP. All the patients indicated for individual nutritional orientation will be evaluated. Measures will be assessed for weight, height and waist circumference to determine the nutritional status and applied the identification questionnaire. The 12 food components of the HEI-R will receive a score ranging from 0 to 10 points for subsequent diet's classification. In order to demonstrate a descriptive presentation, frequency and percentage will be calculated for qualitative variables and means and standard deviations for quantitative variables. To compare the FFQ and HEI-R with the initial FFQ and HEI-R after the orientation it will be used the chi-square test for trend. It will be considered as significance level of p <0.05.
