Abstract

The Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS), is an easy and low-cost tool to surveillance, simultaneously, nutritional deficiency and non-communicable disease risk of the diet, aiming to be validated and applied to a diverse set of food cultures, independently of food composition tables, allowing comparison of diet quality worldwide, what makes it an interesting surveillance indicator for the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goal number 2. The GDQS has already been validated for Mexico, India, China, Ethiopia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States of America populations, leaving a gap on its validation for South America countries, such as Brazil. Objective: To verify the GDQS validity for the Brazilian population as a tool to survillance all types of malnutrition. Methods: The validation will take place in two phases. The first phase has a cross-sectional design, using data from the nationally representative sample from the Household Budget Survey, 2017-2018 edition, to estimate GDQS and verify its corrilation with key-nutrient adequancy of intake (protein, total fat, saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A, folate, and vitamin B12) as well as with body mass index. The second phase will be conducted with longitudinal data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA)-Brazil, in which it will be possible to verify the associated risk of baseline GDQS on cardiometabolic disorders after 4-years of follow-up. In both phases of the study GDQS performance will be compared with the one from the Brazilian Health Eating Index Revised - a well-known tool to estimate diet-related risk for chronic non-communicable diseases; and the Minimum Dietary Diversity - a well-known tool to estimate diet-related risk of nutritional deficiency and undernutrition.
