Abstract Breast carcinoma is a highly prevalent and incident disease. About half the cases we normally find receive the diagnostic in later and/or disseminated stages. The rate of success in such cases are small. The neoadjuvant chemotherapy have been used like a initial treatment for these patients. We know that the great benefit of the citotoxic treatment is achieved by patiets with complete pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. This patient´s group represents about 20% of the cases. Identify previously a patient´s group who would most benefit from neoadjunvant therapy can reduce treatment costs and avoid adverse effects in patients with low probability of response. However, is not yet possible to make such a prediction, even with the use of advanced molecular biology. Breast carcinoma is a highly prevalent and incident disease. Recently in the literature, relates about cancer stem cells be the responsible for tumor recurrence. This celular sub-population have the capacity to repopulate the hostage with cancer cells with the same origin. It is also postulated that this cell subpopulation is resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Thus, the prognosis of a patient directly depend on the amount or quality of CSCs present in their tumor at the time of treatment. Identify, characterize and quantify the presence of CSCs in the primary tumor can be an effective method of predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in locally advanced breast cancer. The objetive of this study evaluate the quantity, estimated by flow citometry, and the genetic profile os CSCs (isolated by FACS) in the primary tumor before the and correlate them with pathological response to the treatment regimen employed. | |
