Abstract

In this postdoctoral research project we will study the effects of high energy jets on the hydrodynamic evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). This study is motivated, basically, by two important experimental observations. The first one is that the QGP shows an intense collective behavior, which suggests the creation of a strongly coupled plasma. The second one is that the jets created in this strongly-coupled medium (QGP) are considerably absorbed, which indicates strong coupling between jets and the plasma. Our goal is to understand the nature of the interactions between highly energetic jets and the expanding QGP. In order to do that, we will investigate, for example, how the disturbances caused by jets in the medium could be experimentally observed through the Fourier harmonics of the azimuthal hadron multiplicity distribution. Precisely, we will perform a hydrodynamic study of the effects of jets in a homogeneous medium (with smoothed initial conditions for the QGP) and in a medium with fluctuations (following an event by event approach). We expect that our studies will provide a new way to bin heavy ion events that will take into account not only the centrality dependence of a given event but also the number of jets observed in each event. Thus, it would be possible to measure experimentally how jets influence the Fourier harmonics of the azimuthal distribution of observed particles, which could be directly compared to our theoretical predictions.
