Abstract

When considering the soil as an important component related to the productivity of forests, responsible for supplying water and nutrients, their conservation is crucial to support this productive activity, at risk of declining productivity, with serious economic and environmental consequences. Under different management practices of forest residues and fertilization, this paper aims to establish links between cause/effect relationship between biomass production and the physical, chemical and biotic environment, to quantify the biomass and nutrient stocks in the shoot , the root system in the litter and soil of a typical stand of Eucalyptus grandis, which define nutrient management systems and pose greater risks to sustainability of the productivity of the stand; simulate the nutritional balance based on input and output of nutrients. The experiment was installed in June 2004 at the Experimental Station of the Department of Forest Sciences ESALQ/USP. The experimental design is randomised complete blocks with nine treatments and three replications, totaling 27 parcels consisting of 81 plants distributed in 9 rows with nine plants spaced 3.0 m between rows and 2.0 m between plants. The treatments consist of different intensities of management of forest residues (canopy, bark and leaf litter) and combinations of fertilizers (N, P and K). The response to treatment will be assessed by measurements of height, diameter at breast height, leaf and soil analysis to determine the concentration of macro and micronutrients, stock C and total C in soil chemical and physical assessment of organic matter soil, leaf litter production and nutrient transport, supply of nutrients in leaf litter accumulated on the ground assessment of leaf area index and economic analysis. The data will be submitted to descriptive statistics and analysis of variance and the relationship between the dependent and independent variables will be performed by means of correlation analysis and regression.
