Abstract

Breast cancer is the main tumor that affects bitches and their biological behavior is similar to what occurs in women, therefore bitches can be an excellent model for comparative study of the carcinogenic process in this type of cancer. Metastasis is a common consequence and major cause of mortality. The identification of tumor markers can be a useful tool in the evaluation of prognostic and predictive factors. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the genic and protein expression of ATM and other markers such p53 and VEGF by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. p53 and VEGF are controlled by ATM and implicated in metastatic process. These markers seem to have an important interaction in women breast cancer, therefore the study of their association can provide a new perspective on the treatment and prognosis of bitches breast cancer. 40 canine mammary gland will be used divided in four groups: G1= normal mammary gland, no history of cancer, comprising 10 animals; G2= 10 benign tumor; G3 = 10 malignant mammary tumors without evidence of metastasis; G4= 10 bitches with malignant breast tumor and metastasis. The results will be evaluated for the presence of each marker in the tissues, its relationship with the biological behavior and histological type of the tumor, recurrence and/or metastasis by the method of analysis of variance. Thereby, we hoped to better understand the involvement of these markers in the carcinogenic process and development of metastasis and provide further data on the prognosis in bitches.
