Action of intracanal medication on biofilm located in areas of apical resorption of extracted human teeth

Abstract

The aim of this study will evaluate the effect of intracanal dressing on bacterial biofilms located in resorption areas of external apical root surface. Seventy-five roots of extracted human tooth featuring external apical resorption will be subject to standardized instrumentation. The roots will be randomly divided into 5 groups of 15 roots each (n = 15). The roots will be expose to strains of E. faecalis for 48 hours to induce the formation of bacterial biofilm in the areas of external apical resorption. After biofilm formation, intracanal medications will be inserted in each root. In the first group (HC) will be inserted calcium hydroxide, in the second group (HC-CLX) will be inserted calcium hydroxide with chlorhexidine gel 2% in the third group (CLX) will be inserted only 2% chlorhexidine gel, in the fourth group (HC -GEN) will be inserted calcium hydroxide extract of ginger glycolic 20%, and the fifth group (control group - CC) will be inserted saline solution. Each group will remain with medication inside the root canal for a period of 15 (fifteen) days. At the end of this period the roots will be evaluated through the calculation of colony-forming units per surface of the specimen (CFU / ml) and analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope. The results will be analyzed using statistical tests ANOVA and Tukey.
