Cognitive function, depressive symptoms and quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease at different stages of disease (stages 3 and 4)

Abstract

The number of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasing dramatically worldwide and in Brazil, leading medical authorities to consider it as a public health problem. Patients with CKD are at high risk for cognitive decline, depressive symptoms and worse quality of life. However, the care of CKD has been restricted almost exclusively to the most advanced stage, when the patient has need of renal replacement therapy. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms and describe levels of QOL in patients with CKD Stages 3 and 4. METHODS: 120 patients will be assessed at an early stage of CKD (60 in stage 3 and 60 in stage 4). For this evaluation will be utilized standardized and validated instruments: Generic Questionnaire Quality of Life Assessment - Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Test of Auditory-Verbal Learning Rey and Color trails Test (cognitive evaluation), Medical Outcomes Study (social support) and the Beck´s Depression Inventory (depressive symptoms), and a form of socioeconomic and clinical data. Will be performed: descriptive analysis (frequency and measures central tendency, with their standard deviations), univariate analysis(chi-square and Fischer, as appropriate) and multivariate (logistic regression, type sepwise forward) to study the outcome variables and their association with the explanatory.
