Abstract

The family Stratiomyidae includes about 375 genera and 2800 species described for all biogeographic regions. The stratiomyids are brachycerans small to medium (2-28 mm in length), easily recognizable by the distinctive venation, with a small discal cell and concentrated radials in the anterior portion. The family has a great variation, including staining. Some flies of the family, as Hermetia illucens Linnaeus, are sanitary and forensic importance, besides its outstanding ecological importance, feeding on decaying organic matter. However, their taxonomic problems and lack of specialists working on large fauna such as the Neotropical region, often restricting its use to more complex studies. Thus, besides allowing the training of a taxonomist, the study of diversity in the Neotropical region of stratiomyids has urgency due to the size of the group and the lack of specialists in the country. Once the candidate has experience with the subfamily Sarginae, was chosen to analyze the genus Acrochaeta Wiedemann, that has 10 described species, of which six to Brazil, and more five new species awaiting description. Never happened any revision of the genus, or phylogenetic and biogeographic study. Also, this project will make a first morphological study of male and female genitalia for the species. The material to be studied will apply specimens borrowed from the MZUSP, the Smithsonian Institution (provided by Dr. Norman Woodley), as well as new collections in the Atlantic Forest, as well as additional material to be asked of collections in the country and abroad. The project will make the description of new species, redescription of known species and a discussion based on phylogenetic analysis of cladistic characters, and parallel studies of species from other genera of the subfamily.
