Abstract

The study of nanosystems has great importance among scientific community, part of that being due to the study of atomic nanoparticles. These agregates are composed of two to a few million atoms, varying in composition and shapes. Due to its small size, surface and quantum effects are predominant, making these systems remarkably different from its macroscopic analogues. Determining the electronic structure of such systems is of great importance to its understanding. Learning how it changes as a function the number and species of atoms that compose the particle could allow us to predicted novel properties and engineer nanoparticles with forethought properties. For this purpose, one technique that is being used successfully on quantum dots, carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires is the capacitance spectroscopy. To apply this technique to the study of nanoparticles, the sample must be composed of sufficiently similar particles, since the spectra will reflect the capacitance of each one of them. As our group has developed a device for mass selecting metal clusters, this method ought to work. Being able to select particles of about the same mass ensures their similarity, and therefore many of them can be studied at once, increasing the strength of the signal to be measured. In this way, the objective of the project is to study the electronic structure of mass selected nanoaggregates using capacitance spectroscopy. (AU)
