Sugar cane development and productivity in the plant cycle under treated sludge applied by means of subsuperficial drip irrigation

Abstract

Brazil is the major worldwide producer of sugar cane and derivatives. According to the increasing demand for sugar and biofuel and consequent sugarcane acreage increase in marginal areas, mainly due to climate and soil requirements. Thus, irrigation has potential use in areas of water deficit. On the other hand, population growth, demand for food, demand for manufactures among other things require substantial amount of water. Thus, it is necessary to provide efficient use of water resources and to seek alternative sources for the agricultural sector. The use of waste water is seen as an alternative to minimize water consumption, as stewater, for example and treated sewage effluent (TSE). However, there is little information indicating the effects of this type of wastewater applied via subsurface drip on sugar cane culture. Based on what it has been explained above, the purpose of this study can be sated as to assess the effect of using the TSE applied via subsurface drip at different depths in the and water consumption and sugar cane development, compared with water irrigation from reservoir and upland condition. Cultivation of sugar cane variety RB768515, has been set on the Feagri/Unicamp experimental field, with five treatments and five repetitions (without irrigation, subsurface drip irrigated through the depths of 0.20 and 0.40 m with water application reservoir and TSE). Considering the importance of soil characteristics in the sugar cane development with the use of wastewater, soil physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics were monitored. Plant water consumption will be estimated during the first cycle of cultivation for field water balance. After the estimation water consumption by plants and with the estimated reference evapotranspiration by Penman-Monteith method, it will be given the crop coefficient. During the first crop cycle it will be held biometric measurements of the plant such as number of tillers, height, stem diameter and leaf area index (LAI). In addition, it will assess the stomatal conductance of plants in different treatments during the crop cycle. Finally, it will be desired to obtain relevant information on the use of TSE culture of sugar cane, as well as proper management of the TSE when applied with underground irrigation system. (AU)
