Abstract

This study aims to analyze Antonio Parreira's (1860-1937) historical paintings, an artist from Rio de Janeiro with a wide and diversified production during the first quarter of the twentieth century. This project's central hypothesis is the understending of this historical paintings as important elements in the creation of the regional identities on the context of the Republican image construction on its first phase (1889-1930). The intention is to inlight, based on Parreiras pictorical production, a very obscure period of brazilian arts on the turn of XIX to the XX century. To this end we will look into 3 pieces: Establishment of the Municipality of São Paulo (1913), The Proclamation of the Piratini Republic (1914) and The trial of Frei Miguelinho (1918).
