Abstract

The objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of supplementation of dairy cows early in lactation, maintained in tropical pastures, with two sources of rumen protected fat (calcium salts of soybean oil and calcium salts of palm oil), with inclusion of 400 g of fat in the concentrate during the rainy season. The animals will be kept in grazing elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameron) and will be supplemented for 90 days. The experimental design is the randomized block design. The parameters evaluated are the following: 1) production and milk composition - fat, protein, lactose, casein, urea nitrogen, and milk fatty acid profile, 2) persistency of lactation, 3) body weight and body condition of animals, 4) dry matter intake of pasture and total 5) ingestive behavior of animals; 6) ruminal variables - pH, volatile fatty acid production, microbial protein and ammonia-N, 7) blood variables - non-esterified fatty acids, glucose and N-urea, 8) morphological and chemical composition of the pasture, and 9) production efficiency of animals. Statistical analysis will be conducted through the procedures REG and MIXED of the SAS statistical package (2002), and will adopt a significance level of 5%.
