Abstract

The assemblage of amphipods associated with Sargassum of the São Paulo coast are well known. Several studies describing the composition and temporal fluctuations of the fauna of amphipods have been developed. Also seeking associate investigations were carried out temporal fluctuations and spatial distribution of populations of these organisms to various environmental factors. More recently, the presence of epiphytic algae was assessed carefully, and is considered an important factor to explain the patterns of occurrence of macrofauna, including amphipods associated with Sargassum species. These crustacean stand out for their representativeness in terms of abundance and species richness in macrophyte communities around the world and are an important food resource for many species of fish. The amphipods, and other Peracarida, are being used as potential biological indicators. Thus, knowledge of its diversity and richness is important for future marine conservation programs. The aim of this work is to verify the occurrence of these animals associated with the brown seaweed Sargassum on four beaches on the Ilha de São Sebastião, two facing the Canal, a place of great human influence, caused mainly by tourism and the presence of TEBAR and two beaches on the ocean side, without influence of tourism that is high on the beaches facing the Channel. Ten fronds of Sargassum is collected at each beach in two seasons, winter and summer, and phenology of algae, as well as the community of amphipods will be evaluated. (AU)
