Abstract

The cellulose and paper factories generate various wastes in its production processes. Among them, the boiler ashes, also called biomass ashes arise concerns among environmental agencies because of the amount produced. In this study, the quality and technical and environmental feasibility of soil use of biomass ashes as soil acidity corrective will be evaluated as well as their effects on the sorption behavior of imazethapyr herbicide. Four ashes and three soil samples will be collected from industries and representative areas cultivated with forests in the State of São Paulo, but with low natural fertility. In order to do so, the soils will be incubated with increasing doses of the ashes (50, 70 and 90% of base saturation) for 70 days, in which the values of pH, H + Al, Al, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, organic carbon, and micronutrients (Zn, Cu, B, Fe, Mn, Ni) at different incubation periods (7, 14, 21, 42, 70 days) will be determined. At the same time, isotherms will be drawn to determine the sorption potential of imazethapyr, which will be calculated by the Freündlich model. This study may help to establish criteria for biomass ashes disposal and help future discussions and decision-making on projects that regulates the soil use of biomass ashes by environmental agencies, in addition to guide management practices for imazethapyr application that would reduce the use of this herbicide and/or reduce its transport potential from the application areas to surface or groundwater sources.
