Abstract

Phenolic compounds occur universally in plants and are part of a large and complex group of organic substances. Cinnamic acids form part of this group of compounds, and caffeic acid is one of the representatives. Besides powerful antioxidant activity, increasing collagen production and prevent premature aging, caffeic acid has demonstrated antimicrobial activity may be promising in the treatment of dermal diseases, such as acne and rosacea. The classic emulsions are widely used by the consumer by sensory providing pleasant, refreshing, however, preparations developed in film form or dry film present as an alternative technology for its ease and safety in transportation, because the weight and the risk of leakage are practically eliminated. Furthermore, this type of product shows practical and convenience in use, since, when applied to the skin wet, should dissolve rapidly, leaving its components thereon. A large number of topical formulations containing caffeic acid has been launched in recent years, however, few studies relate to safety and efficacy of these products as its permeation through the skin. The relevance of this study is based on the use of caffeic acid increasingly common in humans, thus studies that demonstrate and clarify the roles of this substance are very important. (AU)
