Abstract

This undergraduate research project will make a digital computational model of a complete power plant generator unit from a hydroelectric power plant, including the mathematical models for the turbine, penstock, wicket gates, excitation system, synchronous generator and its speed and voltage regulators, inside a real-time digital simulator, available at LPROT installations. The aim is to create a simulation system, capable of representing the power plant generation unit for development, study and tests of the generator control, automation and protection systems, despite the fact of being a training platform for power plant operators and users. The simulator could also be used as a tool to aid the teaching of undergraduate matters, such as Dynamic Systems, Electrical Machinery, Control Systems, Power System Automation and Protection. The undergraduate research student will have contact with the state of the art of real-time digital simulators, applying concepts from electrical circuits, tri-phase systems, dynamic systems, control systems and power system automation and protection.
