Abstract

After noting the absence of genetic structure, the occurrence of effective gene flow and the high number of roadkilled pumas (Puma concolor) in a highly fragmented and disturbed landscape in the northeastern area of the of Sao Paulo state, this project proposes to : 1) model the main dispersal routes of the species in this landscape in order to identify which elements contribute or hinder the animals movements, 2) monitor pumas by GPS-telemetry to characterize how these animals move and are distributed throughout this landscape. It is expected to suggest management strategies to increase connectivity, allowing dispersal movements, maintaining the gene flow, and consequently, the long-term persistence of the species in the northeastern area of the São Paulo state. This project is part of the "Sistema Nacional de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade (SISBIOTA)", in the research web "Predadores de Topo de Cadeia" (CNPq - Processo 563299/2010-0 / FAPESP - Processo 2010/52317-7), Subprojeto 1.
