Evaluation of oral functions, quality and duration of sleep and salivary biomarkers related to appetite, stress and sleep in children with and without obesity

Abstract

The objetive of this study will be to evaluate 250 eight- to nine-yr-old children, with intermediate mixed dentition, divided into groups according to gender and anthropometric assessment. The nutritional status (food intake - 24-hour recall, and anthropometric measures - body mass index, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, arm circumference and waist circumference) will be associated with oral functions: taste, chewing ability and perception of texture of natural foods, quality and durantion of sleep; salivary biomarkers related to appetite, sleep and stress (leptin, ghrelin, cortisol and alpha-amylase), and daily behaviours (physical activity and sedentary habits). The description and the relationship between the variables will be evaluated using descriptive statistics, normality test Komolgorov-Smirnov, chi-square or Fisher's exact test and correlation (Pearson or Spearman). The difference in means between groups will be assessed by Mann-Whitney or unpaired t test (between genders) and Kruskal-Wallis or ANOVA (between anthropometric groups). Multiple linear regression models with stepwise backward elimination will verify the associations between anthropometric data (dependent variables) and the other variables.
