Abstract

The relationship between the elevation of the glenohumeral joint and scapulothoracic upward rotation is called the scapulohumeral rhythm. To know the contribution of the scapulothoracic joint to the elevation of the arm is essential to understanding the behavior, changes, and normal range of the shoulder complex, helping in the evaluation and treatment of patients. The scapulohumeral rhythm in adults is well described in the literature, but in children is still incipient this kind of study. Objective: to compare the 3-D scapulohumeral rhythm during arm elevation in the scapular plane in healthy adults and typical children. Methodology: 25 healthy adults (18-60 years) and 25 typical children (8-12 years) with no history of disease in the shoulder or neck will participate in this study. The volunteers will undergo an assessment of 3-D scapular kinematics during arm elevation in the scapular plane and will perform three repetitions. The ratio between the elevation of the glenohumeral and the upward rotation of the scapulothoracic will be calculated for every 30°increment of elevation of the arm (30° -60°, 60° -90°, 90 -120°) and 30º-120° of arm elevation. The statistical analysis will depend on the normality of the data that will be evaluated using the Shapiro-Wilk test, with a significance level alpha of 5%.(AU)
