Abstract

A major obstacle to the widespread use of self-reducing agglomerates in conventional or emerging ironmaking process is the difficulty of providing this type of pellets with enough mechanical strength throughout the reduction process. Cold bonded pellets or briquettes, with hydraulic binders, can have good resistance to cold compression, but as the process temperature increases the hydraulic binder shows reversal of hydration reactions and loses strenght. The consequence is the loss of resistance of the agglomerate, which prevents its efficient use in furnaces that require integrity of the charge, such as blast furnaces. The development of composite agglomerates containing coal and iron ore, in which the characteristic coking behavior of coal is used to give strength to the briquette represents a tremendous advance in order to solve this problem and allow the use of self-reducing agglomerates in various reduction processes.
