Abstract

The main objective of this research is to carry out an analysis of the procedures used by Leonardo Fróes in the translation into Portuguese of the short stories "The Geranium", "The Artificial Nigger", "The Train" and "Everything That Rises Must Converge" by Flannery O'Connor. The main aim is to observe the solutions found by Fróes to the translation of extracts, which reflect the particularities of the southern North American culture, such as racism. Procedimentos Técnicos da Tradução, by Heloísa Gonçalves Barbosa is the basic theoretical fundamentation, together with other texts about translation, racism and O'Connor's life and work. Therefore, this research will try to explain how the cultural and extralinguistic aspects interfere in the translation from one language into another and affect the possible ways of understanding a literary work.(AU)
