Abstract

From the 16th century, the melancholy became one of the "illnesses" of the Elisabethan age, integranting itself as basic part to the arts in England and later reverberated through Europe. In the end of this century, the great majority of the English musical parts, vocal and instrumental, contained a melancholic figure. John Dowland is one of the main representatives of the Elisabethan melancholy and he used diverse musical emblems to represent it in his works. The objective of this research is to define the Elisabethan musical melancholy and to find its elements in the pavans that constitute the Seven Tears by John Dowland, relating the parts between itself and searching the similarities promised by its title.
