Abstract

Despite de enormous morphologic diversity of its representatives, the family Characidae, has been recognized as a monophyletic group based both on analysis of morphologic and molecular characters. Secondary sexual characters have been recorded and discussed, showing the existence of sexual dimorphism in several Characiformes. However, information about the presence and description of the secondary sexual characters are so sparse way in literature, and little is known about the origin, distribution and phylogenetic and evolutionary significance of these characters in Characidae. This work aims to examine the largest possible number of species and genus of Characidae, in order to detect the presence, describe and determine the phylogenetic and evolutionary significance of these characters in all subfamilies and groups not yet defined in a supra-specific level. The analysis of the secondary sexual characters will be made in stereomicroscope, images of scanning electron microscopy and histology slides of mature adults specimens. It is hoped that the posterior comparative anatomic study allow identifying structures morphologically identical and that the data analysis in conjunction with other characters used in studies of phylogenetic analysis of the groups involved will allow better phylogenetic patterns corroborated evidence.
