Abstract

In this research project, we propose to study theoretically cooling of alkaline earth atoms, calcium in particular, by a train of uitrashort pulses. We will study the cooling efficiency by these pulse trains in excitation schemes involving one and two photons. The role of coherent accumulation of excitation in both schemes will be investigated. We will use the semiclassic Monte Carlo method to simulate cooling and trapping in a magneto-optical trap. (AU)
