Abstract

Biodiesel is appointed as the fuel with a high potential to replace diesel oil, although there are many economic problems to be solved and make it competitive. The main raw material for biodiesel are the lipids, which, when obtained by microbiological fermentation, are known as SCO (single-cell oil), which are considered candidates for the production of "2nd generation biodiesel" (biodiesel 2G). The residual sugar from crystallizing and refining of sucrose from sugar cane can be used as substrates for the production of SCO and have investigated the economic feasibility for the production of biodiesel 2G and adequation to the legislation of the final product. There is also a demand for biofuels (jet fuel) no satisfied on aircraft due to their physicochemical characteristics. This doctorate project aims to assess oleaginous yeast to convert sugars into lipids. It also intends to propose a kinetic model and its parameters, initial production flowchart SCO and evaluate economic data for the production of biodiesel 2G. For this study, computational tools will be used AnaBio 1.0, Matlab and SuperPro Designer v.8. The scale up will be until to 200L in fermenters and 510 Bioflo BioFlo 3000 (New Brunswick Scientific, Edison NJUSA) from National Laboratory of Science and Technology of Bioethanol (CTBE). Initially the microorganisms will be studied the biological material banks DSMZ (German collection of microorganisms and cell cultures) and CCT. Preliminary estimation of the conversion of glucose into lipids by the yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides Y4 showed good fit of the kinetics of growth with Monod model, considering glucose as the only limiting substrate. Whereas nitrogen as the only limiting substrate, the Monod model was not a good fit in the consumption of this substrate. However, Brazilian economic data are needed to estimate the economic viability of the process, as well as more experimental data to validate the model of growth of these microorganisms. (AU)
