Abstract

Our research aims to study the preservation of the architecture of São Paulo, both the colonial period as the period of the coffee, undertaken by the architect Luís Saia from the discussions of preservation and restoration, carried out as the head of the 4º district of SPHAN. In order to do so, this research will seek to critically assess the preservation policy in SPHAN at the time of the performance of Luís Saia as regional director of São Paulo, trying to understand the criteria used to select and preserve and list buildings, and, in this context, the cause of the devaluation of the urban architecture of the period of coffee and the possible links between the conservation policy in Brazil and the Italian preservationist policies in the same period. Beyond that, it will analyze the interventions of architectural restoration undertaken by the architect within the context of ideals of SPHAN in the period of 1937-1975, emphasizing his role between 1946 e 1975, and verifying, in methodology, the criteria that guided the interventions, the influence of international recommendations for restoration and the similarities between these criteria and the theory of restoration of Gustavo Giovannoni. Documentary surveys will be made from primary sources (tipping processes), such as interviews and literature review. It will contribute to the (re)cognition of the acting of the architect Luís Saia, responsible for the inclusion of São Paulo's architectural monuments as part of national memory's preservationist scenario.
