Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), recently described as the third member of the gaseous neuromodulator, is produced endogenously by metabolic pathways with predominant participation of two enzymes: cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) and cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS). In the carotid corpuscle, was described as the presence and participation of CSE generating H2S in response to hypoxia. With respect to the CBS enzyme, this is predominantly found in brain tissue, including the brainstem, a region where are located the main nuclei involved in the control of ventilation and central chemoreception. However, so far not been described the effects of H2S in specific regions of the brainstem involved in respiratory control as the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). Since we detected the presence of CBS in this region and that little is known about the role of H2S in the ventilatory response, this project aims to evaluate the participation of the gaseous messenger RVLM in modulating ventilatory response to hypoxia.
