Abstract

Objective: The aim is to determine the incidence of HIV infection in psychiatric patients who attend to the Center of Psychosocial Care (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial - CAPS). The literature suggests that this population presents a higher risk to HIV infection, when compared to other population groups, although it does not discriminate the kind of psychopathology commitment. Methods: The study will be conducted in CAPS, located in the city of Assis, where the inspection of medical records of 220 individuals, who compose the population served in this institution, will be performed. For the treatment of data, it will be used a descriptive statistics and the analysis and interpretation of correlations when possible, to examine associations between psychiatric diagnosis, using variables of social-demographic and epidemiological-and HIV infection. Background: There is a need to develop public health policies and provide a more comprehensive and integrated treatment with prevention strategies for psychiatric patients, especially those who make use of antiretrovirals considering the pharmacological interaction between different types of drugs. The prevalence of HIV infection among people who take psychiatric treatment suffers great variation according to the samples studied by different authors surveyed here. This information can provide important data for future policies to prevent HIV infection. (AU)
