Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has become an important public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, COPD will grow more than any other disease, making it the fourth leading cause responsible for loss productive life worldwide in 2020. In Brazil, COPD is currently the sixth most common cause of death, and studies of the late 90's, show a sustained growth of this important disease. This study aims to present and analyze the data update, mortality due to COPD, by raising the Mortality Information System database DATASUS (SIM/DATASUS), considering the international code of diseases relating to the years of COPD 1989 to 2010 in Brazil, taking into consideration the Brazilian regions, the age groups most affected, the difference between sex and place of occurrence of deaths.(AU)
