Abstract

This study, composed of two in situ experiments, aims to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation in controlling the progression of erosive lesions and analyze the influence of abrasion on these surfaces irradiated and subjected to acid challenge . In the first experiment, composed of two phases, 14 volunteers will wear intraoral devices containing enamel fragments with erosive lesions and treated or not with Er:YAG laser. During the experimental phases, the specimens will be submitted to erosive challenges or water, alternately and independently. At the end of intraoral phase, specimens will be evaluated for microhardness and optical profilometry. In the second experiment, preparation and selection of specimens of bovine enamel, formation of initial erosive lesions and treatments will be performed as previous described to the first experiment. After treatments, specimens will be mounted in palatal device to be installed in the volunteers to perform the erosive and erosive / abrasive challenges. Erosive challenges will be performed by volunteers through immersion of devices in 150 mL of orange juice ,four times a day, during 5 days. After the erosive challenges, one side of the device will be submitted to abrasive wear. At the end of in situ phase, the specimens will be submitted to scanning by means of an optical profilometer. An analysis by atomic force microscopy will be perform in two specimens of each experimental group. The data obtained in two in situ experiments will be submitted to statistical analysis. (AU)
