Abstract

Experiences concerning to the adoption of automated assessment tools of programming assignments have been quite positive, providing benefits for both students and instructors. However, these tools are rarely used beyond the institutions which they were created. The main reasons for this are related to adaptation and traceability issues. Usually, it is difficult for instructors to identify such tools and to adapt them to the notations and methodologies used. On the other hand, instructors and learning institutions have moved toward the use of learning management systems (LMS). CS courses are an interesting and productive scenario to explore the adoption, use, experimentation and improvement of LMS's. However, most of these systems are not adequately prepared to safisfy the demands of the programming courses. In this sense, research has been conducted in order to specifically explore the development of LMS's for the teaching of programming foundations. Among the issues investigated, special attention has been given for automated assessment of programming assignments. In this scenario, this project aims at investigating the integration of automated assessment tools in LMS's. Thus, through an LMS, the instructor can easily identify and use the best suited tools for the notations and methodologies of his/her courses or the tools that provide the best features that he/she wishes without the need of prior installation and configuration. The idea is to establish mechanisms to minimize the problems associated to the access and use of such tools, encouraging and facilitating their adoption by instructors. Case studies involving real-world education scenarios should also be conducted to validate the supporting mechanisms established.
