Abstract

The concern related to solid waste increases efforts to develop products based on biodegradable materials. Different mechanisms have been studied to optimize the properties of these materials, in order to obtain products that are more interesting from the trade and environment standpoint. The organophilic clays have been used as polymers modifying agents to obtain nanocomposites, which present better properties (mechanical, thermal and barrier). This research project intends to evaluate the influence of organoclays in the biodegradation process of poly-lactic acid (PLA). Besides, the lack of information on the toxic effect of polymers and their nanocomposites after biodegradation process becomes relevant the consideration of toxicity tests in the evaluation of these materials. Therefore, this project also aims at obtain information about genotoxic and mutagenic effects of PLA polymer and its nanocomposites, after different periods of degradation in soil.
