Abstract

The availability of water resources worldwide has declined in the quantitative and qualitative, due to population growth and hence the undeniable attractions of the planned reuse of effluent arouse more interest worldwide. Alternatively, low cost arises then applying anaerobic/aerobic baffled reactor as one of methods for treating effluents, but these are limited in the removal of pathogenic organisms by increasing interest in the health disinfecting effluent. In Brazil, the alternatives the most commonly used are maturation ponds and chlorination. Studies conducted over chlorine shows, however, that this technology is ineffective in removing some microorganisms epidemic. Alternatives to chlorine compounds have been used, such as ozone and ozone/hydrogen peroxide (peroxone). The water disinfection with ozone is a widespread practice in European countries and the United States, but not widely used in Brazil, despite being the ozone disinfectant stronger and faster acting between the disinfecting agents used for disinfection of water and wastewater. There is, however, a concern due to the nature of the byproducts formed and its possible toxicity, but there is little information on these, so a greater number of studies need to be performed, since it is difficult to state with certainty which is on the effect of disinfectant mutagenicity of treated wastewater, and treatment processes must also be optimized to control such reactions and the concentrations are a problem to be solved for practical uses. This research aims to study ozone and ozone/hydrogen peroxide to disinfect sanitary wastewater, from processing of a new configuration of an anaerobic/aerobic baffled reactor, evaluating how these disinfectants act in the oxidation process and the efficiency of inactivation of coliform thermotolerant and Escherichia coli, comparing their efficiency and the formation of formaldehyde (main aldehyde formed) in the application of ozone and peroxone for disinfection.
