Wastewater disinfection using chlorine, ozone, ozone/chlorine and ozone/hydrogen peroxide

Abstract

The increasing necessity of wastewater treatment requires the demands by engineering systems that will make feasible the implementation. An economically feasible alternative to the systems of wastewater treatment is the use of anaerobic/aerobic baffled reactors. Although efficient in terms of organic matter removal is insufficient to inactiv heavy loads of pathogenic microorganisms, which contaminate water and cause environmental and health hazards to public health; because of this, specific steps of disinfection are needed. The majority of wastewater treatment plants in Brazil, does not have a specific step for disinfection. This situation requires to be done planning and projects to provide low-cost implementation and operation of treatment systems. Besides the importance in investigating treatment systems that provide low-costs, it is essential that the effluent achieves the characteristics required by established law. The adoption of a disinfection system should be preceded by a risk-benefit study, in which the treatment class, applied technology, disinfectant to be used and the removal level are the main points to be observed. This way, disinfection methods like chlorination (most widely-used method of disinfection in the water treatment), ozonation, peroxidation, among others, known for its distinction as a promising methods in sanitary wastewater disinfection, should be better studied. According to the scenario exposed, this project aims to evaluate the performance of anaerobic/ aerobic treatment of domestic sewage and also evaluated how ozone, chlorine, ozone/chlorine, ozone/hydrogen peroxide act in the process of oxidation and coliform inactivation effectiveness.
